Competitors of ChatGPT, including Google's Gemini, xAI's Grok, and, to a smaller degree, Meta AI, are catching up to the famous AI chatbot called OpenAI, as per a recent analysis on the consumer AI landscape from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz.
According to a recent analysis on the consumer AI landscape from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, ChatGPT's competitors, such as Google's Gemini, xAI's Grok, and, to a lesser extent, Meta AI, are catching up to OpenAI's well-known AI chatbot. In its fifth version, the report presents data spanning two and a half years regarding how consumers' use of AI products has changed over time.
According to the report, 14 companies appeared on the list of top AI products: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, Civitai, and Hugging Face.
Interestingly, the data shows that Google secured the top four spots for the first time in its AI journey. Google Gemini ranked two for both Mobile and Web, capturing 12% of ChatGPT’s web visits. In the top 10 list of AI web products, the company's AI Studio, a developer-focused sandbox for creating with Gemini models, came in at number 10; NotebookLM came in at number 13. The location of Google's AI initiatives, including Flow, Project Mariner, and Doppl, Google Labs, came in at number 39.
Also, the xAi’s Grok ranked fourth on the web and #23 on Mobile. Meta AI is running behind all of these products, as it ranked 46th in the list.
According to a report, Google did a very good job by un-bundling its products, as it is helping them to gain multiple touch points, with the deep presence of Gemini in Android helping them to gain popularity.
Additionally, DeepSeek and Claude had a 22% decline in growth from their peak on mobile. DeepSeek's decline on the web was much more severe, falling over 40% from its February 2025 peak. But confusion and Claude only became stronger.
Other Chinese artificial intelligence companies also made the top 20 online, including Quark, Alibaba's AI assistant (ranked No. 47 on the mobile list), Doubao, ByteDance's general LLM product (ranked No. 4 on the mobile list), and Kimi, a chatbot from Moonshot AI, which came in at number 17. 75% of the traffic to each of these websites originates from China.
