The hunger strike demanding the 6th schedule and statehood for Ladakh by Sonam Wangchuk has resulted in a series of discussions and unrest in the region. The Centre has been involved in talks with Ladakh leaders with the consideration of a High-Powered Committee (HPC). The HPC has addressed both achievements and violent turns that resulted in the mob incident on September 24.

The press release has talked about the continued dialogue with stakeholders, which includes the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance.

The discussions have led to major results such as raising reservations for Ladakh’s scheduled tribes from 45% to 84% by introducing 1/3rd women’s reservation in local councils, with declaring Bhoti and Purgi as official languages. The recruitment for 1,800 posts has also officially begun.

Violence and government response

A mob had been reported to be reacting to provocative speeches that attacked a political office and government buildings in Leh. The disruption resulted in setting them on fire and clashing with the police. There are over 30 personnel who were injured, and police opened fire in self-defence after certain property damage. The situation was brought under control by 4 PM. The officials cautioned against the circulation of provocative videos on social media. The ministry has aligned the unrest with Wangchuk’s speeches and also noted he later broke his fast and left Leh. The ministry urged restraint and commitment to dialogue.

The government has assured its pledge to address Ladakh’s aspirations by giving constitutional safeguards while rejecting violence. The official communication has put the importance of peaceful resolution and proper use of media amid sensitive developments.
