Who is Achyut Potdar? 3 Idiots actor known for 'Kehna Kya Chahte Ho' dialogue dies at 91

Veteran Marathi actor Achyut Potdar died today at the age of 91 at Jupiter Hospital, where he had been admitted for health complications.

19th August, Tuesday: Veteran actor Achyut Potdar is best known for his role as the strict College professor in 3 idiots. His dialogue, "Areh kehna kya chahte ho," went viral through memes, making him popular among this new generation. Achyut Potdar passed away today at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he was admitted for the last few days due to age-related health issues.

Who is Achyut Potdar?

Potdar had an extensive and remarkable career spanning over four decades. He featured in more than 125 Bollywood and Marathi films. He also worked in over 100 serials.

His most memorable on-screen moment was in 3 Idiots, when he asked Aamir Khan's character, "Arey, kehna kya chahte ho?" The remark quickly went viral, appearing in memes and pop culture. That brief conversation became a cultural touchstone, reinforcing his popularity with audiences of all ages.

Other than 3 idiots

Beyond 3 Idiots, he appeared in significant films such as Tezaab, Ardh Satya, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, Ventilator, and many more. On television, audiences fondly remember his roles in series such as Bharat Ek Khoj (also known as Bharat Ki Khoj), Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs. Tendulkar, and Aahat.

Potdar also had vast experience in a diverse professional life. Before acting, he served the Indian Army as a Captain, retiring in 1967. He later worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.

In an Instagram tribute, Star Pravah praised him for his charm, simplicity, and honesty in all his roles. Director Hansal Mehta, who directed Achyut Poddar in his debut film "Jayate," took to X to share his heartfelt tribute. He wrote, “I was a fan of his character as Jaggu Dada’s father. The line ‘Ae Jaggu’ from ‘Angaar’ made me his permanent fan. It was a privilege to have directed him, and he had amazing timing and a super caustic sense of humour. Go well, Achyut Potdar sir.”

His funeral will be held on August 19, 2025, in Thane.
