Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly called Russian President Vladimir Putin, pressured by tariffs. Not only that, but he has also asked for a detailed explanation of Putin's thoughts on the war with Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made this claim on Thursday. However, neither Moscow nor New Delhi has officially responded yet.
U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a total of 50% tariff in two phases, at a rate of 25% each, on oil purchases from Russia. The U.S. claims that Russia is continuing its war against Ukraine with the money provided by India. Trump has also called on NATO countries to impose tariffs on India and China.
In an interview with CNN on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York, Rutte said, 'India is under pressure due to the tariffs. It has had a significant impact on Russia. A call has gone from New Delhi to Putin. Narendra Modi has asked him to explain his thoughts on Ukraine.'
Trump is preparing to impose "major sanctions" in Russia. He has indicated that he will take substantial steps only when all NATO countries stop buying oil from Russia. However, he is still displeased with some countries that continue to purchase oil from Russia.
Despite the tension between India and the U.S. over tariffs, bilateral relations remain intact. In fact, both countries are engaged in discussions to reduce the strain. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the UN session. They had detailed discussions about bilateral trade agreements.
The U.S. President is set to meet with Modi very soon. A top official from the Trump administration has hinted at this. Not only that, but Trump has also called Modi to wish him on his birthday. He had described the two countries as "close friends and true partners."
