The Indian stock market is about to witness its annual auspicious one-hour trading session, known as “Muhurat Trading,” on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, on Diwali. This is a long-standing tradition on Dalal Street. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) would be open for trading during the afternoon hours.

Muhurat Trading marks the beginning of the new Hindu accounting year, known as “Samavat.”

A blend of tradition and finance

The tradition of Muhurat trading started in 1957 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, which was later adopted by the National Stock Exchange. This special day aligns with the Hindu custom of “Chopda Pujan,” where business owners worship their books of accounts to seek blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesh, and Maa Sharda. This day is considered holy for the stock market too, where investors tend to place orders for stocks, which is also considered a token purchase.

Confirmed structure of the one-hour trading session

Pre-open window: 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM

Muhurat trading window: 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM

Post-close modification: Up to 2:55 PM

Trading would be available for all segments, including equities, futures and options, currency, and commodity derivatives.

The 'Dos' for the special day

Focus on long-term plans: It is generally advised to pre-plan the long-term goal before investing, considering investing in the stocks that have a consistent long-term record.

Prior research before investing: One should not take investment decisions in the heat of the moment. It is advisable to conduct detailed research on the investment zone one wishes to invest in.

Maintaining adequate funds: Make sure the trading account is funded in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles during the short trading window.

The 'Don’ts' for the brief trading day

Avoid emotional decisions: The festive spirit and the positive market sentiment can sometimes lead to impulsive buying. Stick to the plan and do not get carried away by the market noise.

Do not burn excess capital: Avoid using borrowed funds during this short and volatile session; it's better to trade with your own capital.

Do not panic during volatility: Generally, the market tends to be bullish during Muhurat trading, but volatility is to be expected; avoid selling decisions in a hurry.
