The AI-powered personal finance app Roi was purchased by ChatGPT creator OpenAI, and also hired Sujith Vishwajit, the co-founder of the company, as its CEO in a significant step towards strengthening its AI ecosystem. The New York-based fintech startup, which was founded in 2022, aimed to redefine personal investing by blending financial insight with artificial intelligence.
Sujith Vishwajit announced the acquisition on X, stating, "I’m excited to announce that Roi has been acquired by OpenAI! We started Roi three years ago to make investing accessible to everyone by building the most personalised financial experience. Along the way we realised personalisation isn’t just the future of finance. It’s the future of software."
According to LiveMint, Roi will cease operations by October 15, 2025, marking the end of its standalone journey as the rest of the team departs following the acquisition.
Roi’s vision: personalisation meets finance
Roi provided a mobile application as an AI investing companion, allowing users to invest and monitor assets including cryptocurrency, stocks, and NFTs, while building a personalised investing experience. Its interactive AI chatbot adjusted its responses based on user data like profession and investment style, constructing a personalized advisory experience.
As per a TechCrunch report, Roi raised $3.6 million in early-stage funding from notable investors including Balaji Srinivasan, Spark Capital, Gradient Ventures, and Spacecadet Venture. ROI’s App Store description highlighted its unique proposition: “We’ve added Roi AI! It’s like ChatGPT but it knows your investments and has access to real-time market data.”
OpenAI’s growing list of strategic acquisitions
With this acquisition, OpenAI's portfolio of strategic acquisitions aimed at improving intelligence and personalisation across domains continues to grow. Before Roi, OpenAI had purchased Context.ai in April 2025, then Jonny Ive's io in May, Crossing Minds in June, and Statsig and Alex in September.
According to LiveMint, OpenAI's increased emphasis on incorporating AI into routine choices, ranging from analytics to talent management and now personal finance.
OpenAI appears ready to add a new level of human-like personalisation to its next generation of AI tools with Roi's technology and Vishwajit's experience on board.
