Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a young cricketer from India, is in scintillating form in Test cricket. He had been showcasing his prowess in limited-overs cricket up until now. Vaibhav has been turning heads with one explosive innings after another in white-ball cricket, whether it be in the IPL or donning the national jersey. He maintained that streak in Test cricket this time. Vaibhav played for India's Under-19 team against Australia and etched his name in the record books with a blistering century. In the match, he finished his century in just 78 balls, propelling India forward. He eventually got out after scoring 113 runs off 86 balls.
India opted to bat first in this Test against Australia. Opening the innings, Vaibhav displayed an aggressive intent right from the outset. He reached his century in a mere 78 balls, setting a new record for the fastest century in Youth Test cricket on Australian soil. The 14-year-old cricketer even surpassed Brendon McCullum's record.
What records did Vaibhav shatter?
McCullum had scored two centuries in under 100 balls in Youth Tests. Vaibhav has now added his name to that illustrious list. Before this Test, he had scored a century off 54 balls against Australia in 2024.
Just some days ago, Vaibhav had set the record for the most sixes in Youth ODIs, breaking Unmukt Chand's record. Now, he has replicated such a feat in Test cricket as well. Vaibhav now holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian in Youth Test cricket. To date, he has smashed a total of 15 sixes in Tests.
Previously, this record was held by another young cricketer, Ayush Matra. However, Vaibhav surpassed Ayush by hitting 6 sixes in his 113-run innings off 86 balls. India had a formidable total of 428 runs in their first innings.
