Washington Sundar returns to the Indian T20I segment, Hardik Pandya misses out for the Aus tour: Here's the full squad

The Indian T20I team for the Australia tour has announced a few significant changes has been made.

After the Successful campaign in the Asia Cup, Team India will play a 5-match T20I series against Australia on the green hard soil of Australia. Considering the pitch, India has announced a 16-member squad with full of varieties and options.

The series will also have a 3-match ODI series, which marks a new history as Subhman Gill becomes the new ODI captain. The series will start from 19th October, while the T20Is will commence on 29th October. The venues for the T20I matches are Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast, and Brisbane.

Surya Kumar Yadav remains the captain of the side with Shubhman as his deputy. Yashashvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer are among the two prominent players who were overlooked again.

Nitish Kumar Reddy makes a comeback, replacing the injured Hardik Pandya, who is suffering from an injury from the Super 4 match against Sri Lanka. Hardik also missed the Asia Cup final.

Significantly, Washington Sundar also makes his comeback in the T20I team. Harshit Rana is also named in the squad. Varun Chakravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah are also included in the T20I team but omitted from the ODI team to manage their workload. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of India, states the reason in the press conference. These are some significant changes which has been made for the tour, but the remaining squad members remained the same as the Asia Cup.

BCCI is looking into the future now and trying to invest heavily in new stars. Shreyas Iyer announced as vice captain for the ODI series, while Subhman becomes the ODI captain. Also, in place of Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna got a call-up. Jurel also got a call-up as a backup wicket keeper in place of the injured Pant.

As the 26-year-old Gill is all set to become the 28th ODI captain for the Men in Blue in history, spanning over 1000 games and 51 years. Gill’s appointment marks the end of a four-year full-time reign for Rohit as captain, during which he led India to the 2023 ODI World Cup and brought the Champions Trophy crown after 12 years earlier in 2025.

Rohit Sharma is one of seven Indian men to captain in at least 50 ODIs, with a 75% win percentage ranking the best among the club of elite leaders. During his tenure, India won the 2024 T20I World Cup and the Champions Trophy in 2025, and also won the Asia Cup in 2023 in Sri Lanka, and in the same year, the side also reached the final of the World Cup. His exclusion from captaincy will be the end of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy era. He was removed from the IPL captaincy for the Mumbai Indians in 2024. He won 5 IPL trophies with them.
