As per the report of Associated Press, Prince Hisahito, who is the second heir to Japan's Chrysanthemum Throne, celebrated his 19th birthday on September 6, 2025, with a traditional coming-of-age ceremony in Tokyo. The prince wore court robes along with a kanmuri crown and rode through the town in a horse-drawn carriage. He was awarded the elite Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum.
A rare male heir to the throne
Born in 2006, Hisahito is the son of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, and thus the only male heir of his generation. His arrival brought an end to decades of controversy regarding succession reform, as he was the first boy born into the imperial family since 1965, Reuters added. He is currently second in line to inherit the throne after his father, Crown Prince Akishino.
Nature-loving scholar
Differing from most royals who studied at Gakushūin schools, Hisahito studied at Ochanomizu University and currently pursues a degree in biology at the University of Tsukuba. According to The Independent, he has published research on urban insects and is especially fond of dragonflies. Reuters also pointed out that he cultivates vegetables and rice in palace gardens, enjoying the experience of harvesting and sharing them with relatives.
At his first press conference at age 18, Hisahito vowed to balance study with royal duties, stating he is acutely conscious of the tasks ahead for him. In AP's words, his coming of age is a symbolic step forward, combining modern learning with ancient imperial tradition.
