The Indian Institute of Management Bill was passed in Parliament, paving the way for the establishment of IIM Guwahati. It is the first Indian Institute of Management in Assam and the 22nd in the country. IIM Guwahati will re-establish the management study structure in Guwahati, as it will open a new and wide range of career opportunities. Academic activities of the institute are set to commence for the academic year 2025-26, marking a significant milestone in Assam's higher education scene and meeting a long-standing regional demand.
IIM Guwahati begins journey from temporary campus
IIM Guwahati will initially function from a temporary campus provided by the Assam government, while a permanent campus is being built in Palasbari of Kamrup district. To ensure seamless operations, the institute will be mentored by IIM Ahmedabad, one of the country's top management schools. The Union government plans to invest ₹555 crore over five years in infrastructure and academic amenities.
Eligibility criteria
The admission process for IIM Guwahati's flagship master's degree programme will start this year. Candidates will have to take the Common Admission Test (CAT) in November 2025. A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 50% (45% for SC/ST/PWD) is required for eligibility. Final-year students are also eligible to apply. Shortlisted applicants will take the Written Ability Test (WAT), Personal Interview (PI), and holistic profile evaluation based on their CAT percentiles before being finalized.
What is the admission timeline?
The estimated admission timeline will be consistent with other IIMs: CAT in November, applications between December 2025 and January 2026, interviews in February-April 2026, and classes beginning in July-August 2026.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan moved the bill for consideration and passage when the Upper House reconvened at 2 p.m. under the chairperson of Bhubaneswar Kalita, following several adjournments earlier in the day.
According to a report from Hindustan Times, while introducing the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Pradhan said, “...We want to assure the countrymen and especially the people of Assam that IIM Guwahati will admit students from this academic session. Faculties will be appointed, and academic activities will also start.”
