The Ministry of Education has announced the highly anticipated National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 list, and for the tenth time in a row, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has taken the top spot as the undisputed champion of engineering education. With this, IIT Madras has made history, solidifying its position as India's top destination for technological excellence.

Best Engineering colleges

The rankings this year reaffirm the IIT dominance. IIT Delhi took the second position, followed by IIT Bombay in the third position, demonstrating the consistent quality of India's urban IITs. IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur took the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, while IIT Roorkee took the sixth position. IIT Guwahati and IIT Hyderabad took the seventh and eighth positions, further consolidating the IIT grip on the top 10.

With an impressive ninth ranking, NIT Tiruchirappalli also known as NIT Trichy became the only non-IIT university to join this elite list. In the top 10, IIT Varanasi (BHU) came in at number ten, completing a list that attests to the caliber of India's most esteemed engineering schools.

How NIRF rankings are determined

A thorough evaluation system serves as the base for the NIRF rankings, which are not solely determined by reputation. Factors like teaching and learning resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and overall perception are considered to give an authentic measure of academic excellence.

Key takeaways from 2025 rankings

The findings indicate two clear trends: NIT Trichy's impressive rise, which continues to pose a number of challenges to the IITs, and the IITs' sustained supremacy as India's premier engineering school. For lakhs of aspirants looking to secure India's top engineering seats, the NIRF 2025 rankings are a trusted guide, providing insights into where the country's brightest minds are shaped.

India's global standing in Engineering education

With IIT Madras maintaining its position and other IITs challenging innovation and research frontiers, the NIRF 2025 rankings once again highlight India's increasing global standing in higher technical education.
