Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has officially started accepting the registrations for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 from today, August 28. The application portal is now active on the official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in, where students can fill out their application forms, attach the required documents, and deposit the fees based on their respective category. The official IIT Guwahati website has also uploaded the brochure and information for any further reference.
Announced dates and schedule
Application without a late fee is available until September 28, and for those with a missing first deadline, there will be an additional fee until October 9. The dates of the examination as stated in the official website of IIT Guwahati are 7, 8, 14, and 15 of February 2026. The exam will be conducted in two different shifts of 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The results will be announced later on March 19, 2026.
Eligibility, fee structure and so on
As reported by Times of India, graduates in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities from institutions recognized by the government are eligible to apply. Students of the final year are also allowed. SC, ST, PwD, and female candidates pay ₹1,000 per paper during the regular time period and ₹1,500 during for extended time. All others need to pay ₹2,000 during regular registration and ₹2,500 during the extended phase.
This year, IIT Guwahati has also added a new paper in Energy Science (XE-1) in the Engineering Sciences category. There will be 30 papers in total. The exam will be conducted in a computer-based format, with questions of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT).
While taking admissions for postgraduate and for any recruitment into Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), a valid GATE score can be beneficial. The exam is not merely a test but can act as a steppingstone to higher studies, better career prospects, and scholarships for many students.
