Kolkata woke up to a city underwater on Tuesday morning after torrential rain lashed the metropolis around midnight, flooding major roads and strangling transport links. It was termed as "record breaking rainfall" by residents as it caused extensive waterlogging, grounding buses, halting autos and leaving morning commuters knee-deep in water. Authorities struggled throughout the night to drain out water, but a number of low-lying colonies were still underwater by morning.
University exams postponed amid flood chaos
In an early Tuesday notice, Calcutta University announced all university exams that were to be held on September 23 have been rescheduled owing to the unprecedented natural calamity. Calcutta University circular read, "This is to notify that all university examinations scheduled to be held on 23/09/2025 are hereby postponed due to the unprecedented natural calamity. The new date of the examination shall be declared in due time. This notification is made as directed by the University Authority."
Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata also acknowledged the disruption stating that due to unavoidable circumstances, all examinations scheduled today have been postponed and Classes will not be held today.
City prepares for more rain
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of scattered showers over the next 24 hours, requesting people to stay away from unnecessary travel. Relief operations are being carried out by municipal teams, but the officials caution that drainage might still be slow in extremely waterlogged pockets.
