Veteran actor, comedian, and director Govardhan Asrani, commonly referred to as Asrani, died on Monday, October 20, in Mumbai, at the age of 84, after prolonged illness. The last rites were conducted the same day at Santacruz Crematorium. With his perfect comic timing and versatile acting, Asrani etched an unforgettable niche in the hearts of millions across a career span of over six decades with classic hits like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Dhamaal, Abhimaan, Bawarchi, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the veteran actor on X, writing, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

The death of Asrani shocked the movie fraternity and the audience. Anupam Kher took to X and mourned, saying, "Dearest #AsraniJi! Thank you for making the world a better place to be in with your persona!! On and off screen! We will miss you in physical form! But cinema and your ability to make people laugh will keep you alive for years to come! Om Shanti!”
Akshay Kumar, who worked with Asrani in many films, made a heartfelt post remembering their last interaction on the sets of Haiwaan: "Speechless with grief at the passing of Asrani ji. We had just shared the warmest of hugs just a week back at the shoot of Haiwaan. Bahot pyare insaan the…he had the most legendary comic timing. From all my cult films Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag to De Dana Dan, Welcome and now our unreleased Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan…I had worked and learned so much from him. What an absolute loss to our industry. God bless you Asrani Sir, for giving us a million reasons to laugh. Om Shanti," he posted.
Singer Adnan Sami praised him as “a genius of his craft and an artistic treasure,” recalling Asrani’s dedication and love for his work, writing, “I had the honour of working & spending time with him when I requested him to appear in my music video of ‘Lift Karade’ & I too wanted him to reenact his legendary ’Jailor’ character for which he generously agreed. He was so committed that he made sure that every aspect of his getup was from the original makers of the Sholay Movie- i.eThe Wig, Moustache & Uniform. His enthusiasm and passion for his work was an example for us all to learn from. He was a thorough gentleman. He was full of love & grace.
