The latest release from the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe is “Thamma”. The film is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. The film was released in the theatres on 21 October. The film has provoked buzz for its star cast, supernatural theme and expectation for a comfortable Diwali weekend. The early online reviews show that the audiences are split over how well it delivers.

What works?

Some viewers praised the film’s engaging blend of romance, folklore and supernatural horror. The film is rooted in the legend of the “betaals”. The cast delivered strong performances, especially from Ayushmann, who adds to the emotional depth, and Rashmika’s role controls the attention. The cameos from Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui were also emphasised as fun additions to the universe.

One fan posted: “Thamma is definitely the best movie of the year … story, acting and the cameo by Varun Dhawan as Bhediya is a treat to watch.”

What doesn’t work?

Some viewers are less convinced. The criticism is centred around predictable plot arcs, an overstretched second half and music that didn’t match the hype. One user wrote, "It's not surprising that #Thamma's songs didn't work as well as the previous films of the MHCU — because this one is about Betaals."

Balancing excitement with criticism

The film’s ambition stands out. It attempts to build up the universe, mixing horror, comedy and folklore in a visually rich package. The ambition also made it a tougher ask as the expectations were high after the franchise’s success, like Stree and Bhediya. The film’s combined reception emphasises the hazards brands take when developing a universe and genre category.

“Thamma” is an amusing ride for viewers who are willing to welcome its folklore-infused horror and star-driven energy. The film might not live up to the promise of its predecessors, but it certainly offers conversation, spectacle and an addition to the horror-comedy genre worth checking.
