FX has officially canceled one of its most celebrated comedies, English Teacher, despite the series enjoying a flawless run on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

FX Pulls the Plug on English Teacher

According to a report by Deadline, FX has decided not to renew English Teacher for a third season. The comedy series created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez have earned widespread acclaim during its two-season run. Season 1 received an impressive 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 achieved a perfect 100%, making it one of FX’s best-reviewed shows in recent years.

The show follows Evan Marquez (played by Alvarez), a gay high school English teacher in Austin, Texas, who juggles personal challenges, workplace politics, and community chaos in a witty, satirical tone. The ensemble cast features Stephanie Koenig, Sean Patton, Carmen Christopher, Enrico Colantoni, and Jordan Firstman.

Controversy and Cancellation

Although FX has not provided an official reason for the cancellation, the decision comes just six weeks after Season 2 premiered in September 2025. The move follows lingering controversy surrounding the show’s creator and star.

In late 2024, Alvarez was accused of sexual assault by his former co-star and friend Jon Ebeling with allegations later detailed in a New York Magazine feature. Ebeling also implicated actress Stephanie Koenig, alleging she was complicit in a “harmful dynamic.”

At the time, FX issued a statement saying:

“We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Despite the controversy, FX renewed the show for its second season in early 2025. However, the network has now quietly cancelled it, with no public statement linking the decision to either the allegations or the show’s performance.

Fans of English Teacher have expressed disappointment online, calling the abrupt ending “disheartening” given the show’s creative success and critical praise.
