The Peacemaker season 2 finale didn’t just wrap up another chapter of Christopher Smith’s story, but it cracked open the door to the future of the new DC Universe.

In the final moments, fans saw the birth of Checkmate, a secret organisation that will play a major role in upcoming DCU projects, and the reveal of Salvation, a mysterious prison planet that now holds Peacemaker himself.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn confirmed that both elements were designed to connect Peacemaker to the wider DC Universe. “Those were always part of the plan,” Gunn said. “Before I even sat down with the DC writers’ room, I had mapped out that Checkmate and Salvation would anchor the transition into what comes next.”

Checkmate’s debut and Salvation’s mystery

According to Den of Geek, the finale establishes Checkmate as a new heroic unit within the DCU, a possible bridge between street-level heroes and larger cosmic conflicts. Meanwhile, People reports that Salvation, the planet where Peacemaker ends up, was introduced to signal a broader narrative arc rather than a standalone sequel. All episodes of Peacemaker season 2 are now streaming online.

Gunn described Chris Smith as an “important character in the DCU” and hinted that fans will see the consequences of Salvation “in future stories, not just in Peacemaker.”

NO immediate plans for season 3

Despite the cliffhanger, Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that there are no current plans for season 3. “This story leads directly into other DCU projects,” he explained. “That doesn’t mean there won’t ever be a third season, but right now, the focus is on expanding the DCU.”

Fans can stream both seasons of Peacemaker exclusively on Max while they wait to see how Checkmate and Salvation shape the next phase of the DC Universe.

As the dust settles on Peacemaker’s season 2 finale, it’s clear that James Gunn isn’t just closing a chapter but he’s building the foundation for the DCU’s next era. Whether Peacemaker returns in his own show or crosses paths with new heroes, one thing’s certain: his story is far from over.
