August 23, Saturday: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to be planning a documentary about Princess Diana as part of their new first-look agreement with Netflix, The Sun reports. The show, which is being talked about as a possible release in 2027, would tie in with the 30th anniversary of Diana's death in Paris. A source from the industry told the publication: "If Harry wants to do it then Netflix will bite his hand off.
Harry, who was just 12 when his mother died, has previously shared how deeply the tragedy shaped him.
In 2017, he appeared in two documentaries on Diana, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy and Diana, 7 Days, which attracted millions of viewers.
Netflix deal reduced but not worthless
The Diana project comes as Harry and Meghan announced on August 11 that they had renewed their creative partnership with Netflix through Archewell Productions. The new deal features With Love, Meghan season two, a Christmas special in December, and Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, a documentary on Ugandan orphans.
But this time the deal is thinner. One source close to the deal told the Daily Mail it's worth less than their initial $100 million deal, calling it a "first-look" deal—Netflix has first refusal but no guarantee. Publicist Mark Borkowski dubbed it "less champagne budget, more Prosecco by the glass."
Netflix's Bela Bajaria had the couple to thank as "influential voices" whose shows "resonate with viewers all over." But outside of their record-breaking Harry & Meghan docuseries, other ventures have found it difficult to replicate its worldwide reach. A Diana documentary, if approved, might be the couple's best card yet.
