The countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 is almost over as North America prepares to host the biggest edition of the tournament in football history. For the first time, the World Cup will be jointly hosted by three nations, the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the competition featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across 16 cities.

Before the action begins on the pitch, fans will witness a series of opening ceremonies spread across the three host countries. Designed around the theme of unity through football, the celebrations will showcase the cultural identity of each nation while highlighting the global nature of the tournament.

Three countries, one shared celebration

According to Al Jazeera, unlike previous editions, the 2026 World Cup will not have a single opening ceremony. Instead, FIFA has planned interconnected events in Mexico City, Toronto and Los Angeles, each beginning 90 minutes before the host nation's opening fixture.

The ceremonies are being produced by renowned creative director Marco Balich, known for his work on Olympic Games opening ceremonies and other major international events.

Mexico's celebration will embrace traditional elements such as papel picado and indigenous performances. Canada's event will focus on the country's multicultural identity, while the United States will present a visually ambitious production centred on entertainment and modern pop culture.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino described the ceremonies as a reflection of both the individuality of the host nations and the unity that defines the World Cup.
