East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giant 2-1 on Sunday night, turning the 58,676-strong Salt Lake Stadium erupt in red and gold. The victory ended their opponents' lengthy winning streak at the stadium and secured their spot in the Durand Cup semifinals.
The game’s narrative shifted by Greek Striker Dimitrios Diamatakos in the 19th minute when Hamid Ahadad was forced off with a serious injury. Bruzon turned to Diamantakos, and the substitute delivered in style. He broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 38th minute, before doubling the lead shortly after halftime with a composed finish off a sweeping midfield move.
Mohun Bagan, however, were not willing to surrender quietly. In the 68th minute, Anirudh Thapa pounced on a loose ball to reduce the deficit and reignite the contest. The Mariners pressed hard in the dying stages, yet, East Bengal’s defence, anchored by Kevin Sibille and goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill, stood resilient under immense pressure.
The result carried added significance for East Bengal. It was their first senior derby win since last year’s Durand Cup, coming just weeks after their 3-2 triumph in the CFL Premier Division. Under coach Oscar Bruzon, the team has shown renewed structure, attacking flair, and the ability to handle crunch moments and qualities that have often deserted them in recent years.
Earlier in the day, East Bengal edged past Jamshedpur FC to secure their semifinal berth. They now prepare to face Diamond Harbour FC on Wednesday, buoyed by derby glory and a growing sense of belief.
For Bruzon’s side, it was a timely reminder of their ability to deliver on the big stage, while for Mohun Bagan, it served as a wake-up call before the upcoming league campaign.
