23rd August, Saturday: Mehtab Singh had a very successful stint at Mumbai City FC, which lured the Mohan Bagan Club to sign him to strengthen their tactics by allowing him to operate as a strong option in the central defence as well as in the wing-back positions.
Mehtab Singh started his career in the East Bengal camp’s junior team. The East Bengal club is considered to be the arch-rival of the Mohan Bagan Club. Since the year 2020, the Punjab-born player has been responsible for holding up the defence of Mumbai City FC, which made him one of the most trusted personnel of his arena in the Indian Super League. This year, Mehtab expressed his wish to return to Kolkata, therefore sparking a war between the two legendary clubs to sign him.
The Mohan Bagan Club has secured the signing of Abhishek Singh, strengthening the left wing, and with the signing of Mehtab, the right wing back position will also be strengthened. New tactics will be framed, and a fresh start is waited for the upcoming seasons. Mohun Bagan’s management believes his presence will solve their long-standing defensive issues and provide depth for the season ahead.
East Bengal had shown interest in reclaiming their former player, but they pulled back after learning of the high transfer fee demanded. Mohun Bagan, however, seized the opportunity and closed the deal. This signing is not just about one player but about sending a strong message in the battle for supremacy in Kolkata football.
