On Nabami night, a shocking incident unfolded near the Berhampore police station, where three youths, including the victim’s boyfriend, allegedly gang-raped a young girl under the pretext of taking her for Durga Puja Pandal hopping. Following the incident, the victim’s family filed a written complaint at the Berhampore police station, after which the police took the accused into custody. The incident has sparked outrage in the area, and an investigation is currently underway to uncover the full details of the crime.
The IC of Berhampore police station stated, “Based on the written complaint, three young boys were arrested that very night. On October 1, when produced before the ACJM court in Berhampore, the judge ordered 14 days of judicial custody. The minor girl has undergone a medical examination, which has corroborated the rape allegation”.
According to police and local sources, one of the three youths had a prior relationship with the minor girl. Exploiting this connection, the young boy lured her out under the pretext of visiting Durga idols. The girl and the three youths toured the area's idols on a motorbike. Subsequently, they allegedly took her to a brick kiln near the banks of the Bhagirathi River, where the three youths stand accused of raping her.
The incident came to light when two tractor drivers arrived at the brick kiln to park their vehicles that night. Upon seeing the drivers, the three youths fled from the scene. The drivers then rescued the minor girl and brought her to the local police camp.
On that night only, family members of the three youths were summoned to the camp. Subsequently, police detained the three youths and brought them to Berhampore police station. Following the receipt of a written complaint, they were formally arrested.
