Tension gripped Malda on Sunday after a man’s body was found floating in the Bhagirathi River near Bontola under the English Bazar police station. Locals first spotted the body in the morning and immediately informed the police, who recovered it and sent it to Malda Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. Police are cross-checking the body’s description with missing person reports from nearby areas.
With Durga Puja celebrations just over, the incident has shocked the local community.
Some residents suspect foul play, alleging that the man might have been murdered and his body dumped in the river. Police have begun a thorough investigation, stating that the cause of death will be determined once the autopsy report is available. If foul play is confirmed, officers will probe who was behind the killing.
