A second-year medical student at a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur has been allegedly gang-raped. On Friday night around 9 PM, the student had gone outside the college campus with a male classmate. According to the allegation, five youths came and detained them, and the female student was forcibly taken from the road to a nearby forest. It is alleged that the student was gang-raped there.
Later, the young woman's classmate rescued her and took her to the college. The student was admitted to the same hospital. It is initially known that the victim is a resident of Odisha. A female classmate called the victim's home and informed them about the incident. That very night, her family members came to Durgapur. They went to the hospital and met with her. At that time, the young woman revealed everything to her family.
The victim's family members claim that the role of the male student with whom the young woman had gone outside the college campus is also highly suspicious. They claim that he fled without resisting during the incident. Meanwhile, upon receiving the complaint, police from New Township police station reached the spot. However, neither the police nor the medical college authorities have commented on the matter so far. The victim student's father said, "I had sent my daughter to study medicine in Durgapur. I could never have imagined that such an incident of assault would happen to her. Given the situation, I will not keep my daughter here anymore."
It's worth noting that in August 2024, the rape and death of a young female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata had caused an uproar throughout the state. This incident is again stirring up those horrific memories.
