A horrific crime has hit the capital once again. A female student at a university in Delhi has been the victim of rape. Allegedly, the first-year B.Tech student was sexually harassed and subjected to an attempted gang raped on the campus itself. The victim informed the police that four people surrounded her at a campus construction site. They allegedly ripped her clothes and even tried to gang-rape her.
The student complained to the Maydhangi police station on Monday afternoon, police sources said. Following her complaint, the police went to the university and opened an investigation. At first, the Delhi Police lodged a complaint of sexual harassment and began investigating. But after recording the detailed statement of the victim, they also lodged a case of attempted gang rape.
The university campus is equipped with CCTV cameras everywhere. Police are scanning the footage to identify the accused. CCTV footage is being gathered from the particular area in which the incident took place, as per the student. Yet the status of the accused as university students or not is not yet confirmed.
While the incident took place, there were widespread protests on the university campus. The students say that nothing has been done by the administration for such a serious accusation. No official announcement has come from the university administration on the issue but said that it was cooperating fully with the investigation.
The students accuse the university authorities of victim-blaming and accusing her of not being mentally stable. It is interesting to note that the student had enrolled in the university on the Rajasthan quota only a month back. She was allegedly suffering from depression owing to her parents' separation and was undergoing counseling.
As per university sources, an internal probe committee headed by Professor Sanjay Chaturvedi has been constituted. The committee has been instructed to present its report within ten days. The investigators noted that "the nature of the incident will become clear only after reviewing the student's statement and medical report.
