A shocking twist has emerged in Panchkula after Haryana Police booked former Punjab DGP (Human Rights) Mohammad Mustafa, his wife and ex-minister Razia Sultana, and other family members in connection with the murder of their 35-year-old son, Aqil Akhtar. The FIR also names Aqil’s wife and sister, turning the case into a full-blown family crisis.
Aqil was found at his Sector-4 residence in Mansa Devi Complex on the night of October 16. He was declared dead on arrival at Civil Hospital in Sector 6. At first, police didn't suspect any foul play, but that was until a complaint surfaced the next day, reshaping the investigation.
It all started with a social media post
The case took a grim turn when Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla, filed a complaint on October 17, citing Aqil’s August social media post, in which he allegedly expressed fear for his life and accused his family of conspiring against him.
Chaudhary also shared screenshots of Aqil’s diary entries with senior police officials, demanding a “fair and impartial probe.”
Following this, an FIR was registered under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Mansa Devi Complex police station, confirmed DCP Srishti Gupta.
According to the FIR, Aqil said that he had discovered an illicit relationship between his father and wife, alleging that his mother and sister were plotting to kill him or trap him in a false case.
‘This is dirty politics,’ says Mustafa
Reacting to the allegations, Mohammad Mustafa called the FIR “baseless” and “politically motivated.” “The registration of an FIR doesn’t prove guilt. The real investigation begins now, and truth will come out soon,” he told Hindustan Times.
Mustafa described Aqil as “mentally unstable” and battling addiction, claiming he had been in and out of rehabilitation centres.
“He was once brilliant, completed law last year, but his addiction worsened. This FIR is nothing but dirty politics and cheap thinking,” he said.
Mustafa further alleged that Aqil had posted another video in October contradicting his earlier claims of fear, adding that police had been called several times due to his erratic behaviour.
SIT to Probe the Case
The Haryana Police have formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police to probe the case.
“The SIT will investigate with an open mind — ensuring no guilty person is spared and no innocent person suffers,” DCP Gupta said.
Complainant Chaudhary has urged authorities to examine Aqil’s videos, digital evidence, call records, and post-mortem report, insisting that “his death demands a thorough and impartial investigation.”
Mustafa, who retired from Punjab Police in 2021, joined the Congress thereafter. His wife Razia Sultana, a three-time MLA from Malerkotla, has not commented publicly on the case yet.
