On October 7, Kurukshetra police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted two individuals travelling by motorcycle from Patiala, Punjab, into Haryana. In their possession, they had a hand grenade and five live bullets. The bomb disposal squad was called in and successfully diffused the grenade, according to The Tribune.
The suspects were identified as Gurvinder alias Gaggu (from Patiala) and Sandeep (from Ambala, currently residing in Patiala). They were presented before the court and remanded in police custody for five days for further questioning.
Kurukshetra’s CIA-II unit registered a case under relevant arms and explosives laws. During initial interrogation, the police inquired about the source of the grenade, its intended use, and whether the accused had accomplices or shelter in other states.
Transferred to Punjab, probe widens
On a later date, the accused were taken to Punjab for a detailed investigation. Punjab police joined the operation, reportedly detaining individuals who had provided shelter to the arrested men. The authorities suspect the hand grenade might have originated through gangster networks operating in Punjab.
Law enforcement officials allege that modern criminal gangs on social media are enticing youths with promises of money and weapon culture, drawing unsuspecting individuals into crimes, according to a PTI report. The arrested duo’s links to such groups are under scrutiny. Investigators are now mapping potential interstate routes, scrutinizing digital communication, and examining whether the grenade was meant for harmful use in Haryana or elsewhere.
