Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday met the family of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide earlier this month. Khattar visited the officer’s residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, and spoke to his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, expressing deep sorrow and offering full support, according to a PTI report.
Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead at his residence on October 7. According to officials, he allegedly shot himself with his service weapon. His death has sparked strong reactions within administrative and police circles, especially after reports surfaced that he had written an eight-page suicide note before his death.
Officer’s note alleges caste discrimination and harassment
In the purported note recovered from the scene, Puran Kumar had accused eight senior IPS officers of engaging in “blatant caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and public humiliation.”
The note has since become a key piece of evidence as police continue their inquiry into the incident.
Khattar assured the bereaved family that the matter would be investigated “fairly and transparently,” as per reports.
The tragic death of the IPS officer has reignited discussions on the mental health challenges faced by officers in uniform and the need for better institutional support systems.
