5-month-old allegedly dies consuming herbal cough syrup in MP, investigation underway

The syrup was bought from a local medical store. Authorities have sealed the shop due to the investigation.

A child has allegedly died after consuming herbal cough syrup. This allegation has emerged in the Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. 20 children had died after consuming contaminated and adulterated cough syrup. The health department had previously issued warnings regarding this. However, again a 5-month-old child has allegedly died after consuming cough syrup in the same area.

A five-month-old girl named Ruhi Minote died after consuming a mixture of various medicines, including herbal cough syrup, purchased from a private medical store in Bichua town on Thursday morning.

According to sources, Ruhi had been ill for several days. Unable to find a doctor at the government hospital, Ruhi's father Sandeep Minote bought the syrup from a local medicine shop. He said his daughter had a fever and cough since Monday. Unable to find a doctor at the local health centre, he bought medicine from a shop. After taking it, his daughter recovered somewhat, but her physical condition deteriorated again. On Thursday morning, he took his daughter to the local Community Health Centre. There, the doctor declared Ruhi dead. He filed a complaint at the local police station regarding this.

According to police sources, two people ran the shop. Bichua police station officer Satish Uki said that after receiving this complaint, they have been brought in for questioning. Samples of the medicine have also been collected. Officials from the Food and Drugs Department are examining them. He also said the entire matter is being investigated.

The local administration has sealed the shop due to the investigation.

Notably, this incident occurred a few days after the deaths of 20 children from Parasia and Chourai in Chhindwara district and three more children from Pandhurna and Betul districts. Last month, those children in Parasia town were given Coldriff cough syrup according to the prescription of pediatrician Pravin Soni. An investigation has begun into that incident. Six people, including the doctor, have also been arrested.
