The Centre has asked states and Union Territories to remain on high alert and strengthen preparations for severe heatwave conditions expected in the coming weeks. According to reports, the advisory comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted above-normal heatwave days across several parts of the country this summer.
As per Mint quoted in their report, officials have reportedly instructed state administrations to take urgent preventive steps to minimise heat-related illnesses and deaths. The advisory also emphasised improving healthcare readiness, public awareness campaigns, and emergency response systems as temperatures continue to rise in many regions.
States told to strengthen healthcare preparedness
As part of the preparedness measures, states have been asked to establish dedicated heatstroke units in hospitals and ensure the availability of medicines, ice packs, oral rehydration solutions, and sufficient beds for patients affected by extreme heat conditions.

Reports of Mint, stated that hospitals and primary health centres have also been directed to train medical staff in handling heat-related emergencies. Authorities reportedly stressed the importance of quick treatment for dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke cases during peak summer months.
The Centre has further advised local administrations to maintain uninterrupted water supply and ensure proper functioning of cooling systems in healthcare facilities.
IMD predicts above-normal heatwave days
According to the IMD forecast, several states are expected to witness more heatwave days than usual this season. Northern, central, and northwestern parts of India are likely to face prolonged periods of extremely high temperatures.

The rising temperatures have already started impacting daily life in multiple cities, with several regions recording temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius in recent days. Experts have warned that prolonged exposure to intense heat can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related health complications, especially among children, elderly citizens, and outdoor workers.
Focus on public awareness and prevention
According to the reports of Mint, the Centre has also asked states to increase public awareness regarding heatwave safety measures. Authorities reportedly advised people to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and seek immediate medical attention in case of dizziness or heat exhaustion symptoms.
Schools, local bodies, and disaster management authorities have also been instructed to coordinate awareness drives and precautionary measures in vulnerable districts.
According to the report of Mint, officials stated that emergency response systems and disaster management teams are being kept on standby in areas likely to experience extreme temperatures over the coming weeks.
