A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck India’s Andaman Islands at 12:06 pm on Sunday (November 9), as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred 90 kilometers deep in the Andaman Sea, around 126 kilometers southeast of Diglipur. No immediate reports of casualties or damage have surfaced yet.

NCS wrote on X, “EQ of M: 5.4, On: 09/11/2025 12:06:28 IST, Lat: 12.49 N, Long: 93.83 E, Depth: 90 Km, Location: Andaman Sea.”

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded it slightly higher at 6.07.

After the quake, Malaysia confirmed that there was no tsunami threat in the area. Experts say shallow earthquakes usually cause more destruction than deeper ones because they occur closer to the surface. This makes the ground shake harder, increasing the chances of structural damage and casualties.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in one of the world’s most earthquake-prone zones, known as Zone V — the highest seismic risk category in India. This zone also covers regions like northeastern India, North Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch, all of which are highly sensitive to seismic activity.

Other earthquake hits of this year

In late June this year, Andaman Sea jolted by three earthquakes in one day. The social media post of NCS read then, “EQ of M: 4.6, On: 30/06/2025 11:22:23 IST, Lat: 9.45 N, Long: 93.93 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Andaman Sea.”

Another earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in late July, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), as reported by Reuters. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres (6.21 miles), making it relatively shallow. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) also confirmed the earthquake in a post on X, noting the event and its seismic details.
