Every year on November 14 India celebrates the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India as Children's Day. The day is marked across the country to raise awareness about children's rights, education, and welfare. "For Every Child, Every Right" is the theme of this year, aimed at serving as a reminder of shared responsibility for ensuring equality, safety, and opportunity for every child in India.

A day rooted in Nehru’s vision for India’s future
Children’s Day initially was celebrated in India on November 20, coinciding with Universal Children’s Day, but following Nehru’s death in 1964, it was joined to his birthday as a mark of respect for his love for children and his belief that they form the nation’s base.
Drawing competitions, cultural performances, child rights awareness drives, and educational campaigns are being planned in schools and community organizations throughout the country. A number of NGOs and government departments will also announce the launching of new programs concerning child welfare and educational outreach initiatives.
Focus on rights, welfare and the road ahead
The officials said the celebrations this year would focus on reaffirming India's constitutional commitment to the cause of children's welfare. Schemes like Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Right to Education Act, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and PM POSHAN Abhiyaan keep shaping the national agenda for health and education.

Children's Day also reminds one of the many challenges that are still to be overcome which is child labour, malnutrition, and dropout rates. UNICEF India has called upon all stakeholders to strengthen the implementation of welfare programmes and ensure access to digital learning for every child.
Beyond celebrations, it is a day of action-a reminder that an investment in children today is the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive India tomorrow.
