Even to get legitimate government benefits, one has to pay bribes. Such allegations have surfaced in Rajasthan. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a Village Development Officer in Rajasthan on charges of accepting bribes in exchange for approving funds under the Prime Minister's Housing Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana).
According to a report in a national daily, a complaint filed with the ACB states that an official named Sonakshi Yadav initially demanded a bribe of 2,500 rupees from the complainant in exchange for approving funds under the housing project. Although the complainant initially paid 1,000 rupees, the VDO did not approve the funds.
Subsequently, the victim approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Following their advice, the victim went to pay the accused officer a second installment. It was at this moment that the officer was caught red-handed. Under the direction of DGP Smita Srivastava and the supervision of Deputy Inspector General Anil Kayal, a special team set a trap to arrest the corrupt officer. A case has been filed against the accused Sonakshi Yadav under the ACB's anti-corruption law. Interrogation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, in a statement on Friday, the ACB claimed that Mumbai's Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACD) has arrested a senior police inspector and a junior officer while accepting bribes. Senior Inspector Chandrakant Sarode (52) and Sub-Inspector Rahul Waghmode were caught in the act.
Waghmode was accused of accepting bribes amounting to lakhs of rupees. Waghmode allegedly called the complainant and demanded 50,000 rupees for himself and 5 lakh rupees for Sarode, claiming that he had helped by not arresting the complainant's daughter and had also taken action against the opposing party.
