In a special ceremony held at the Opera House, Mumbai, the Mumbai Police celebrated Diwali by returning stolen valuables and missing mobile phones worth over ₹1.10 crore to their rightful owners. The event highlighted the force’s focus on swift investigation, technological support and trust-building with citizens.
According to the post shared by Mid.Day, officers from the Crime and Recovery (CR) portal and the Crime Investigation Department recovered 150 mobile phones and jewellery, using advanced technical tracking and coordinated follow-ups. The recovered items were handed over in the presence of senior officials.
Calling it a step towards restoring confidence, the force said the initiative reflects “dedication to swift justice and community trust.”
Few netizens applaud while others call it ‘PR stunt'
However, the netizen reactions online reflected mixed sentiment. While many praised the effort, some questioned delays and the larger system. One Facebook user, Harold Moraes, wrote: “Well done Mumbai Police. Wishing you continued success. Happy Diwali to you all.”
Another user, Imran Bharde, raised concerns about recovery timelines, commenting:
“My nephew’s new iPhone 16 was robbed, but despite several follow-ups, the result is negative. Once something is gone in our country, one should forget it as it is gone forever.”
Others expressed scepticism over the timing, with one comment reading:
“It clearly means that they already got those items but didn’t hand over to their original owners… they waited for Diwali.”
Despite the criticism, many applauded the department for tracing and returning valuables ahead of the festive season. “Mumbai Police is doing a very good job,” another user wrote, summing up the positive chorus under the post.
