Oil India Ltd (OIL) has signed an MoU to fund the construction of 47 dedicated toilet facilities for girls in schools across Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya, with completion expected by December under a joint monitoring mechanism.
Dedicated girl-sanitation push in Ri Bhoi
OIL will provide around ₹72 lakh to support schools in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi that currently lack separate toilet blocks for female students. District deputy commissioner, Abhilash Baranwal, noted that this move was triggered after the visit of Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, during which inadequate sanitary infrastructure in local schools was flagged.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between OIL and the Ri Bhoi district administration on Friday, setting out the financial assistance and scope of the programme.
Monitoring, timeline and broader impact
The Ri Bhoi District Deputy Commissioner, Abhilash Baranwal, noted that construction work will be jointly monitored by OIL and the district administration to ensure quality and timely handover by December.
By providing proper sanitation for girl students across multiple schools, the initiative aims to boost girls’ attendance, safety and dignity, addressing one of the key impediments in school participation.
The partnership shows how corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds are being directed to on-ground educational infrastructure in the North-East.
