In a bold move, BJP leaders have started preparing for independent contests in Thane and Navi Mumbai. Their goal: secure the mayor’s seat in both civic bodies, rather than depend on alliances. The TMC (Thane Municipal Corporation) spans 131 seats across 33 wards, and BJP’s aspirants have set a target of 70+ seats, according to a ToI report.
MLA Sanjay Kelkar, speaking at a gathering of party nominees, asserted confidence in BJP’s independent bid, stating, “If we contest alone, we have a chance to install our own mayor.” He urged local votes to rally behind BJP’s vision.
A preparatory workshop was also held, drawing 416 aspirants from across 18 mandals in Thane, where slogans such as “Abki Baar 70 Paar” and “Mahapaur BJP hounar (BJP will be mayor)” were raised, underlining the party’s ambition.
The Shiv Sena (Shinde camp) is not silent. Naresh Mhaske, Shiv Sena’s MP from Thane, admitted that some party workers question the logic of alliance when BJP speaks of going solo. He indicated there’s a growing sentiment within Sena to contest civic polls independently in Thane and Navi Mumbai.
Mhaske also acknowledged friction: reports suggest BJP functionaries may have obstructed Sena-led development works in Thane, adding to internal jealousy and grievances. Still, he urged party discipline and sought calm, while promising that Shiv Sena’s local cadres would have a say in the path forward.
The coming weeks will be crucial. The BJP and Sena must decide whether to contest jointly or engage in friendly rivalry in key Mumbai suburbs. The outcome may well redefine local power balances in Thane and Navi Mumbai.
