Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Egypt’s Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdelatty in the capital and praised Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for his “crucial role” in facilitating the Gaza truce deal. The meeting comes days after Egypt helped mediate the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, ending weeks of intense conflict.
Dr Abdelatty briefed the Prime Minister on the outcomes of the first India–Egypt Strategic Dialogue, held earlier this week, which reviewed cooperation in trade, defence, energy and technology. The talks also covered regional stability and humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
‘A key voice for peace’
During the discussion, Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Sisi for his diplomatic leadership in the ceasefire effort. “Egypt’s role in achieving the Gaza peace agreement has been crucial,” Modi said, according to officials. He added that India supports all initiatives that lead to lasting peace and stability in West Asia.
Later, in a post on X, Modi wrote, “Pleased to receive Foreign Minister of Egypt, Dr. Badr Abdelatty. Conveyed deep appreciation for my friend, President Sisi for his crucial role in the Gaza Peace Agreement. India-Egypt Strategic Partnership continues to grow from strength to strength for the benefit of our people, our shared region and the humanity.”
Strengthening India–Egypt ties
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the growing partnership between New Delhi and Cairo, particularly in areas such as defence collaboration, renewable energy, technology transfer, and people-to-people ties. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen engagement through institutional mechanisms like the Strategic Dialogue and high-level visits.
The meeting follows Modi’s invitation to attend the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El Sheikh last week. Though he did not attend personally, India was represented by Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh. The summit brought together global and regional leaders to discuss ways to enforce and monitor the ceasefire, which was mediated by US President Donald Trump with Egypt serving as guarantor.
Officials said the two leaders also exchanged views on global developments, including ongoing humanitarian efforts in Gaza and shared positions on counter-terrorism and regional stability.
