Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday broke his silence on the death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide on October 7. Calling the incident “deeply tragic,” Saini assured a fair investigation and said no one, “no matter how influential,” would be spared if found guilty.

Speaking at the BJP’s state executive meeting in Panchkula, Saini paid tribute to the late officer with a two-minute silence and extended condolences to the bereaved family. “Our government will work to deliver justice if an injustice has been done to the family,” he said, promising a thorough probe into the allegations.

Officer’s note has names of senior officials

Y Puran Kumar, a 2008-batch IPS officer, reportedly left behind a “final note” naming several senior officers and accusing them of caste-based discrimination and workplace harassment. This revelation has sparked outrage and calls for accountability within the police and administrative department.

Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, who serves as commissioner and secretary in the Haryana government’s Department of Foreign Cooperation was in Japan as part of the CM-led delegation when the tragedy occurred. Saini said he was informed of the officer’s death during his Japan visit and immediately contacted Amneet Kumar, assuring her of all necessary support. “I spoke to her personally and sent officials to their residence to assist the family,” the CM added.

Political reactions and CM’s caution

The incident has drawn sharp political reactions across Haryana, with opposition parties demanding an independent inquiry. CM Saini, however, cautioned against politicising the tragedy. “This is not an issue for politics. It’s a matter of justice for a family that has suffered a grave loss,” he said.

Saini also confirmed that he has been in “constant touch” with the central government to ensure progress in the investigation. “If anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken. No influence or position will protect the culprit,” he reiterated.

Kumar’s death has reignited a conversation on caste-based discrimination within the police force, with civil society groups urging reforms and institutional accountability.
