Umar-un-Nabi was known to be a bookworm, mostly keeping to himself. His sister-in-law Mujammil had even said that his marriage had already been fixed. But an India Today sting operation at Al-Falah University revealed quite another story. Students there claimed that Umar ran his classes in a Taliban-like manner. They alleged he made separate seating arrangements for boys and girls. Not just that, many also voiced frustration about the overall academic standards of the university.

Umar was an assistant professor at Al-Falah University. Following the Faridabad explosion case, the police arrested Mujammil Ahmed, Umar Mohammed and Shahin Shahid. All of them worked at the medical college and regularly taught batches of students. Naturally, Umar was in close interaction with several of them. The college has been under increasing scrutiny since the Delhi blast.
During interrogation, Shahin confessed that he frequently talked with Umar. Students also confirmed this. However, they vigorously disagreed with the notion that Umar was a quiet man. One student said, “We usually sit together in class. There is no separation between boys and girls. But in Umar sir’s class, he would make us sit apart. He didn’t like boys and girls sitting together.”
Mujammil Ahmed, arrested in the Faridabad case, too, was a professor in this university, though students claimed he never took classes. A student said that Mujammil never taught them. They had never seen him in class, though they heard his name. Umar, however, had frequent contact with the students. One MBBS student, pointing towards the building, said, “Umar sir stayed in this hostel.” But the students insisted they never saw the i20 car used in the blast.

Four days have passed since the Delhi explosion. Investigators are convinced that Umar-un-Nabi was the main culprit. He was the suicide bomber and the one driving the i20 packed with explosives. DNA tests have confirmed this. Now, details of Umar’s ‘Taliban-like’ mindset have also surfaced. Authorities allege that he had been planning terror activities from within Al-Falah University itself.
Students say the number of patients at Al-Falah Medical College and Hospital has dropped sharply since the blast, while many are also unhappy with the university’s standards. A student, echoing the frustration of several others, said that there are barely any facilities. Even the practical classes don’t happen on time.
