The Khagra Shmashan Ghat Durga Puja Committee of Baharampur, West Bengal, came up with a rather unique idea where they unveiled a demon idol modeled after US President Donald Trump for the 2025 celebrations. The depiction quickly became the centre of attention, drawing crowds and media coverage.
Symbolism rooted in trade grievances
Pratik, a committee member, said, “We created this idol in response to the fifty percent tariff he imposed on us. Our Modi, who considered Donald Trump a friend, was betrayed by him. To reflect this, we have portrayed him as a demon.” The idol embodies local frustration over trade policies perceived to hurt India’s interests.
Inauguration and public reactions
Baharampur Municipality Mayor Naru Gopal Mukherjee attended the inauguration, as locals naturally flocked to see the unique centerpiece. Pratik added, “Since yesterday’s inauguration, we have received a strong and positive response. We see him as a demon because he betrayed India behind its back.”
When global politics meets local culture
Trump’s image has previously appeared in Indian cultural contexts, including a 2018 Telangana farmer who built a temple for him. The Baharampur demon crafted by artist Asim Pal illustrates how international tensions resonate in local traditions, merging artistry, cultural commentary, and political satire.
As the 2025 Durga Puja festivities continue, the Trump demon remains a talking point, highlighting how global affairs intersect with grassroots cultural narratives in India.
