The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked its 93rd anniversary in a different style this year. The event made it to the headlines for an unexpected reason: its cleverly themed dinner menu. Hindustan Times reported that the menu included dishes named after Pakistani cities with historical connections due to past Indian air operations. The playful but implied name convention was soon trending on social media, generating conversations and responses across platforms.

Indian Air Force menu sparks social media buzz

As per the menu, the dinner included main courses such as ‘Rawalpindi Chicken Tikka Masala’, ‘Rafiqui Rhara Mutton’, ‘Bholari Paneer Methi Malai’, ‘Sukkur Sham Savera Kofta’, ‘Sargodha Dal Makhani’, ‘Jacobabad Mewa Pulao’ and ‘Bahawalpur Naan’. Desserts carried on the theme, with items like ‘Balakot Tiramisu’, ‘Muzaffarabad Kulfi Faluda’ and ‘Muridke Meetha Pan’. Each of the places named in the menu were once the targets of India's air missions under Operation Bandar back in 2019 and Operation Sindoor which took place earlier this year, both conducted in retaliation for cross-border terror attacks.

Pictures of the menu were quickly shared on social media, with many complimenting the IAF on its light-hearted but historically grounded approach. The menu successfully balanced humor with a reminder of the IAF's operational function in protecting national security. Although the idea might be unconventional for a military event, it was an innovative means of celebrating the organization's long history and operational achievements.

IAF celebrates history and legacy through creativity

The 93rd-anniversary meal also highlighted the IAF's attempts to relate its operational history to the public. By using satire and humour, the IAF was able to make a formal celebration more memorable and shareable. Experts point out that such efforts create a bridge between the armed forces and the civilian population, providing insight into the organization's heritage while engaging with the public.

Overall, the viral menu illustrates the link between tradition, history, and creativity. Starting from the main courses to the desserts, the event provided guests with a taste of history quit literally while reaffirming the IAF's mission to guard the country.
