A festive ride turned into tragedy in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, when Ravi Kumar Sharma, 25, died after his throat was slit by a stray strand of Chinese ‘manjha’ on Wednesday. The incident occurred on the Sitapur highway, where Sharma was travelling with his wife to her parental home in Mohammadi to celebrate Bhai Dooj.

According to Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi, the couple was riding their motorcycle when the glass-coated kite string got entangled around Sharma’s neck. He was rushed to the Government Medical College but was declared dead on arrival. Sharma was a resident of Nagla Jaju village under Katra police limits, as per a report by PTI.

Repeat offences despite earlier crackdown

Police sources said this is not the first such fatality in Shahjahanpur. In January, a police constable died in a similar manner near Azizganj, prompting authorities to ban the sale of the dangerous thread.

In the past, police authorities across multiple states, have appealed to the public to report anyone selling or using the banned string, which poses grave risks to bikers, pedestrians, and birds.
