Phase 2 announcement and ongoing process
The Election Commission has stated that preparations must be completed before undertaking this extensive exercise. In October last year, the Commission announced Phase 2 of SIR, covering 12 states and Union Territories.
West Bengal is included in that list, and the SIR process there is currently in its final stages. The development has led to political controversy, with several parties raising allegations.
According to Election Commission data, the SIR was last conducted in India between 2001 and 2004, approximately 21 years ago.
