The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several parts of the country, including Tamil Nadu, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and states across Northeast India, over the next seven days.

According to the weather department, the Southwest Monsoon is strengthening and advancing further across India, bringing widespread rainfall activity to several regions between June 9 and June 14.

Monsoon set to intensify across multiple regions

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 20 cm over parts of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal during the period.

The weather agency said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further over the next two to three days. The monsoon is expected to cover additional parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the remaining areas of Tamil Nadu.

It is also likely to progress into the southwest and northwest Bay of Bengal, along with parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim and the remaining Northeastern states.

Tamil Nadu, West Bengal likely to receive intense rainfall

Several parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to witness frequent spells of rain in the coming days. Rainfall activity is also likely to increase in the foothill regions and adjoining areas of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

In Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, rainfall is expected to remain fairly widespread throughout the week. The IMD has indicated the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some locations, particularly in the foothill areas.

The department has cautioned that intense rain spells could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and make travel difficult in hilly regions.

Northeast India braces for wet week

States across Northeast India are also expected to receive widespread rainfall through the week. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to witness regular rain activity, with some places experiencing heavy to very heavy downpours.
