Israel has unveiled plans to install a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in one of its major cities, marking a significant cultural initiative aimed at strengthening ties between India and Israel. The announcement was made by Yaniv Revach during celebrations marking Shiv Rajyabhishek Din.

The proposed memorial is expected to honour the legacy of the Maratha ruler while serving as a symbol of the growing friendship between the two nations. According to Revach, the project is envisioned as a long-term cultural bridge that will help connect Indian and Israeli communities through a shared appreciation of history and leadership.

Project aimed at deepening India-Israel cultural ties

According to NDTV, speaking about the initiative, Revach said the statue would be much more than a commemorative structure. He noted that the project is intended to create stronger people-to-people connections between India and Israel and introduce more Israelis to the life and achievements of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The diplomat said the statue is planned for installation in one of Israel's major cities, though the exact location has not yet been announced. He emphasised that the project reflects Israel's recognition of Shivaji Maharaj's enduring influence and significance in Indian history.

Revach also highlighted the historical relationship between Maharashtra and the Indian Jewish community, many of whose descendants now live in Israel and continue to contribute to Israeli society.

Maharashtra government to provide assistance

According to NDTV, to ensure the monument accurately reflects Shivaji Maharaj's legacy, Israeli authorities have sought assistance from Devendra Fadnavis regarding historical references, artistic inputs and design considerations.

According to Revach, the Maharashtra chief minister immediately agreed to extend support for the initiative. The collaboration is expected to help create a memorial that is historically authentic and culturally significant.

In a letter addressed to Fadnavis, the Israeli Consulate stated that the statue would stand as a powerful symbol of the close relationship between India and Israel while also celebrating the historic links between Maharashtra and Jewish communities with roots in the state.
