US ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Friday indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet, though he stopped short of confirming when the meeting would take place.

Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Gor responded cautiously when asked about a possible timeline for talks between the two leaders.

"Stay tuned, I'm sure it'll happen at the right moment," news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

It has been about a year since Modi and Trump last met during an official working visit in Washington DC. Relations between the two countries saw friction in the intervening period after the United States raised trade tariffs to 50 per cent. While tensions have since eased, a formal trade agreement has yet to be finalised.

Focus on growing India–US cooperation

During his remarks at the summit in Delhi, Gor described the event as "very impactful" and highlighted expanding opportunities for collaboration between India and the United States, particularly in emerging technologies.

Improved engagement between the two countries followed India's participation in the Critical Minerals Ministerial convened earlier this month by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar represented India at the meeting.

Pax Silica partnership unveiled

Before the signing of a new India–US initiative called Pax Silica, Gor delivered a keynote address outlining the broader significance of the partnership. He said that by signing the initiative, both countries had chosen to win together.

Referring to the bilateral relationship as a "coalition of the capable and the willing", he described India's inclusion in Pax Silica as a key step in ensuring that the "commanding heights" of technology remain with free nations.

As the US envoy formally welcomed India as a co-founder of the coalition, he added that cooperation between the two democracies is "now limitless".

Union minister of electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw also addressed the summit, linking the declaration to India's growing semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.

"We are not just holding a summit here; we are building the future. We are laying the foundation for the young generation," he said.

India signed the Pax Silica Declaration alongside US officials, including Ambassador Eric Garcetti and Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg.
