At least 39 people have died and 51 others are injured after a stampede during a political rally held by Tamil actor-politician Vijay in Karur district, Tamil Nadu. The victims include 13 men, 17 women, 4 boys, and 5 girls. In contrast, the hospitalized patients include 26 men and 25 women. Earlier reports by the government had placed fatalities at “at least 10,” but the death toll subsequently rose as more casualties were confirmed.

"So far, 39 people have died, including 13 men, 17 women, 4 boys, and 5 girls — while 51 people, including 26 men and 25 women, are receiving intensive treatment," Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told Reuters. The incident occurred during a political rally held by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

What exactly happened?

Thalapathy Vijay is one of the most celebrated actors of the South. From the time he entered politics, his fandom helped him generate mass rallies. From 2024 to the last night, he was able to draw mass crowds.

During yesterday’s rally, the situation got out of hand. Some visuals from social media videos showed Vijay throwing water bottles from the top of the vehicle to fainting supporters and calling for police.

Sharing his grief, Vijay wrote on X that

"My heart is broken; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow. I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for a speedy recovery for those who are undergoing treatment in the hospital."

According to MK Stalin, at least 44 doctors are actively checking the conditions of injured people. Vijay also announced a donation of 20 lakhs for the dead people.

Reactions of the other side

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin verified the figures and created a panel led by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the reasons for the tragedy. The report would be given to the government for further action.

"The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X.

This isn't the first time Vijay's rallies have raised security concerns. The media claimed at least six killings during the inaugural meeting of his political organization, which launched in October last year.

Despite police constraints, such as convoy size and site changes, the immense amount of public attendance has regularly strained local infrastructure.
