The Union Sports Ministry is planning to transform New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium into a modern Sports City spanning 102 acres, ahead of India’s larger Olympic ambitions for 2036. Officials are studying global models from Qatar and Australia before construction begins.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex in New Delhi is set for a massive transformation. India Today reported on Monday, November 10, citing sources of the Sports Ministry, that the existing structure will be deconstructed to allow a state-of-the-art Sports City to be developed in 102 acres of land.

Notably, the project belongs to the larger movement of modernising sports infrastructure in India, which seeks to host the Olympic Games in 2036.

The redevelopment is expected to introduce international-class facilities according to the officials, which would be able to develop world-class athletes and hold international competitions in the manner of international standards.

The India Today report also noted the authorities are already examining infrastructure prototypes in Qatar and Australia, two nations that have developed a contemporary multipurpose sporting ecosystem capable of hosting the world championship events.

However, there is no definite schedule of the time when construction will start.

What you need to know about the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

One of the most recognisable venues in India is the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, constructed to host the Asian Games in 1982, which was later upgraded to host the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Currently with a seating approximately 60,000 people, and has been used to host World Para Athletics Championships, several football matches, Independence Day ceremonies and music concerts.

Earlier this year, the same venue hosted the World Para Athletics Championships, for which a new mondo track was laid at an estimated cost of ₹30 crore.
