A viral video from Jist. News on Instagram has captured the alarming rise in air pollution during Diwali night, as a Delhi resident compared indoor and outdoor air quality levels in real time using a portable AQI monitor.
In the clip, the man is seen holding the device inside his home, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) reading stood at 194, categorised as “moderate” to “poor.” Stepping outside just moments later, the monitor’s readings shot up rapidly, touching the maximum displayable level of 999, indicating “hazardous” pollution.

The video, which has since gone viral, has reignited concerns about the impact of firecracker smoke and stagnant weather conditions on Delhi’s post-Diwali air. Viewers online are calling the visuals “shocking” and “eye-opening,” as the contrast between indoor and outdoor readings clearly shows the sharp decline in air quality after the festival celebrations.
Delhi’s air turns toxic after festivities
According to pollution monitoring agencies, Delhi’s overall AQI hovered around 400 on the morning after Diwali, a level classified as “severe.” Such conditions are known to cause respiratory distress, especially among children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing lung diseases.
Experts have repeatedly warned that the combination of firecracker emissions, vehicular pollution and crop residue burning in nearby states will contribute to the annual air quality crisis across the National Capital Region (NCR) after Diwali.
Authorities have urged the local people to limit outdoor exposure, use air purifiers indoors, and avoid strenuous activities until conditions improve.
