Popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg tragically passed away in an accident in Singapore. However, even a week after his death, the cause remains shrouded in mystery, fueling growing anxiety and anger among his fans. On Thursday, during a police raid on the residence of Zubeen's manager Siddharth Sharma, fans reportedly launched an attack, hurling bricks at police vehicles. In a parallel incident, an ardent fan, devastated by the singer's death, is said to have jumped from a bridge in Guwahati.
Devotees of the beloved singer are seething with anger. They have demanded the arrest of Siddharth Sharma and Shyamkanu Mahanta, organizers of the Northeast India Festival. Notably, Zubeen had traveled to Singapore to participate in this very festival. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police, formed to investigate the singer's death, conducted separate raids on Thursday at the homes of Siddharth Sharma and Mahanta, drawing massive crowds.
1) Assam Police have detained Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a musician who was with Zubeen during the yacht trip in Singapore. He had been a long-standing member of Zubeen's band. His Instagram bio reads, "Sound Engineer, Music Producer, Arranger, Musician, Computer Hardware Engineer."
2) Two SIT teams visited the residences of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma on Thursday. Both locations were thronged by the singer's fans. According to a PTI report, police resorted to a baton charge after bricks were hurled at their vehicles outside Sharma's house.
3) Neither Mahanta nor Sharma were present during the raids. The singer's manager's mother, brother, and sister also resided in the same apartment but have not been seen since the singer's death. Locals have declared that they will not allow the Northeast India Festival organizer and his family to reside in Assam.
4) An India Today report states that a fan, grief-stricken by Zubeen's death, jumped from the Saraighat Bridge in Guwahati. Before leaping, he reportedly cried out, "Zubeen da is no more, what will we do? Jai Zubeen da!". Onlookers were left stunned by this incident, after which the SDRF initiated a rescue operation.
